Spherical Roller Thrust Bearings Overview
Spherical roller thrust bearings carry axial-dominant combined radial and axial loads and can also support axial load in one direction. Their high load capacity, relatively high limiting speed and self-aligning capability make them suitable for demanding thrust-bearing positions.
When shaft or housing manufacturing accuracy is limited, or when installation error causes angular misalignment, the spherical raceway allows the bearing to align itself without preventing normal operation. Standard designs normally use pressed steel cages or machined solid cages.
Self-Alignment and Combined-Load Capacity
The raceway curvature enables the roller set to adjust to angular deviation between shaft and housing. At the same time, the contact geometry provides high capacity for axial-dominant combined loads and single-direction axial location, improving reliability when mounting accuracy or structural deflection cannot be fully eliminated.
- Automatic compensation of angular misalignment
- Axial-dominant combined-load capacity
- Single-direction axial load capacity
- Suitable for installation and manufacturing errors
High Capacity and Speed Performance
The asymmetrical spherical rollers and raceways create a robust load path for heavy thrust service while maintaining good operating speed. Proper preload or clearance, lubrication and heat control are required to realize the specified load and speed capability under combined loading.
- High load-carrying capacity
- Relatively high limiting speed
- Stable performance under combined loads

290000 Type Structure and Cage Options
| Option | Configuration | Selection Guidance |
|---|---|---|
| 290000 Type | 39000 Series self-aligning thrust design | For axial-dominant combined loading |
| Pressed Cage | Pressed steel cage | Standard lightweight metallic option |
| Solid Cage | Machined solid cage | Selected for size and operating requirements |
Mounting and Operating Considerations
Although the bearing can compensate for angular misalignment, shaft and housing seats should still be manufactured and installed accurately. Select cage, sealing and lubrication according to load, speed and temperature. Confirm the intended axial load direction and provide adequate heat dissipation for heavy-duty service.
